The long waited 11g realease of Oracle BI is finally available on OTN. It took a while to get this installed on my laptop but it was worth the wait. More about that later… First let me start by sharing the install steps and pre-requisites. As always, documentation can be found on Oracle Technology Network.

In 11g, you need to start with creating the required BI Platform database schemas using the RCU – Repository Creation Utility. While this is new in 11g and an additional step, it does make the configuration tasks of the BI Scheduler and BIP scheduler and so on much simpler. This is available as a sperate download on OTN in addition to the 4 zip files for OBIEE 11g. So to start with you need to download the following files from OTN.

These files are for x86 32bit windows machines. Downloads are also available for 64bit windows. Linux downloads are also available.

I extracted the 4 OBIEE zip files to a single folder and that created 4 disks. The RCU had be extraced on a folder path with no spaces. If you give spaces and then try to run the RCU it gives an error saying it cant find the file. So once you go to the BIN folder where the RCU is extracted you will find the rcu.bat file.

Running this files opens a wizard based UI.

The database versions for Oracle Database currently supported The database versions for Oracle Database currently supported are 10gr2 and 11.1.0.7. I had a 11.1.0.6 database and gave it a try and it showed me a warning like the one below. However I ignored it and the RCU proceeded on my database and created the schemas. Not advisable for production ofcourse but does work on 11.1.0.6 as well.

The pre-requisites check happens next.

Specify the password for the schemas. For BI as the selected component, it creates 2 schemas. One for the BI Platform including the scheduler etc and other for Middleware Metadata Services. As you can see, the RCU is a common utility in the 11g realease for other middleware products like SOA, IDM, ECM, BPM etc.

You can change the tablespace if needed. I left it as default.

And with that the schema creation is done.

Now to install OBIEE, in the Disk1 extracted folder you will find a setup.exe. This opens the Universal Installer. Its another step in unifying the installation experience of all products from Oracle which is new in 11g and makes life much easier.

The following screenshots show each of the steps in details.

The next screen gives 3 choices for the type of installation. If there is an existing weblogic instance on which OBIEE would be deployed, Enterprise Install is the appropriate choice. Simple Install creates a weblogic instance and deploys OBIEE on that. Its similar in a way to the complete install in 10g where OBIEE gets installed and an OC4J container is created where the web application for OBIEE is deployed. The major difference in 11g is all OBIEE services are deployed as opmn managed services within the weblogic instance and not as windows services. What this means is, weblogic needs to be started first and then the weblogic managed services can be started including the BI Server, BI Presentation server etc from within the weblogic admin console. More about this in the next post.

The username/password below becomes the admin password for weblogic and OBIEE

There is a choice to install just Answers, Dashboards etc as well as install BI Publisher and Oracle Real Time Decisions together. The installer will automatically configure the integration of the 3 pieces after the installation if all 3 are selected.

The database schema created using the RTD is entered in the next step.

And with that its ready to install.

The installation takes a while the OBIEE starts to automatically configure the installation and integrating the components as a part of the that happens automatically.
